The Rook at Mount Saint Vincent University is seeking an enthusiastic Assistant Manager to help drive our mission of providing exceptional service, fostering positive consent culture, and promoting a safe, inclusive environment for all. 

About The Rook: The Rook is more than just a café and pub; it's a cornerstone of the MSVU community where students, faculty, and staff come together to socialize, study, and relax. With a cozy atmosphere, an inviting mix of modern and vintage decor, and a commitment to serving quality products, The Rook transforms from a daytime café to a lively pub in the evenings. We host a variety of engaging events like open mic nights, trivia nights, and live music performances.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Assist in the planning and execution of daytime and evening operations and events. 

  • Supervise and train staff, ensuring a high level of service and safety. 

  • Manage inventory, receive and handle products, and maintain food safety standards. 

  • Coordinate and promote engaging programming events at The Rook. 

  • Provide excellent customer service and promote our retail offerings. 

Qualifications: 

  • Must be over 19 and able to pass an enhanced criminal record check. 

  • Enrolled at MSVU in at least 0.5 credits or equivalent. 

  • Certifications in Serve Right, Advanced Food Safety, First Aid, and CPR/AED (or willingness to obtain). 

  • At least one year of experience in commercial food preparation, the service industry, or customer service. 

  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills. 

  • Ability to handle difficult situations and maintain confidentiality. 

  • Commitment to the principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience in a supervisory or managerial role in a café or pub. 

  • Background in tourism and hospitality management, business management, culinary arts, or related fields. 

  • Experience with harm reduction, sexual violence prevention, or working with diverse communities. 

Working Conditions: This role involves working in a lively, sometimes high-pressure environment where you'll need to stand, walk, bend, and lift to 25 lbs. You'll also be responsible for handling customer escalations, including managing inebriated patrons with support from Rook Security and Campus Security.
